Vintage 1950s Vogue Irish Aran Cable Sweater #366 

This lovely Aran combines cables, seed & popcorn stitches into a charming design .

SIZES: 
Directions are for size 12. 
Changes for sizes 14 & 16 are in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
Chadwick’s Red Heart Knitting worsted, 4 ply, 21 [23, 25] 1 oz pullout skeins
1 Pair each #3 & #5 Knitting Needles
1 Set #3 DP Needles

GAUGE:  
7 sts = 1”;    
8 rows = 1”

BACK: 
With 33 needles, cast on 108 [116, 124] sts. 

Work in k 1, p 1 ribbing for 2 ½” [3”, 3”] from beg, inc 1 st at beg of last row. 

Change to #5 needles & patt.

1ST ROW [WRONG SIDE]:  [P 2 tog, then k into front, back & front of next st] 5 [6, 7] times, * k 3, p 9, k 3, [p 3 tog, k into front, back & front of next st] 3 times; rep from * once more, k 3, p 9, k 3, [p 3 tog, k into front, back & front of next st] 5 [6, 7] times.

2ND ROW:  P 23 [27, 31], * k 9, p 18; rep from * once more, k 9, p 23 [27, 31].

3RD ROW:  [K into front, back & front of next st, p 3 tog] 5 [6, 7] times, * k 3, p 9, k 3, [k into front, back & front of next st, p 3 tog] 3 times; rep from * once more, k 3, p 9, k 3, [k into front, back & front of next st, p 3 tog] 5 [6, 7] times.

4TH ROW:  Rep row 2.

5TH ROW:  Rep row 1.

6TH ROW:  P 23 [27, 31], * work a cable on next 9 sts [sl next 3 st on dp needle & hold in front of work, k next 3 sts, place dp needle with 3 sts to back of work, k next 3 sts, then k 3 sts from dp needle], p 18; rep from * once more, work a cable on next 9 sts, p 23 [27, 31].

7TH ROW:  Rep row 3.

8TH ROW:  Rep row 2.  Rep these 8 rows for patt.  Work even until 12” [12 ½”, 13”] from beg or desired length to underarm.

SHAPE ARMHOLES: 
Bind off 5 [6, 7] sts at beg of next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 st each end every other row until 87 [91, 95] sts rem. 

Work even until armholes are 6 ½” [7”, 7 ½”], end with an odd row.

SHAPE SHOULDERS: 
Bind off 10 sts at beg of next 6 rows.  Sl sts on holder.

FRONT: 
Work as for Back until armholes are 4 ½” [5”, 5”] end with an odd row.

SHAPE NECK: 
Work in patt across first 52 [56, 60] sts, sl last 17 [21, 25] sts just worked on holder, work in patt across rem 35 sts. 

Work on one side only, dec 1 st at neck edge every other row until 30 sts rem. 

Work even until armhole is 6 ½” [7”, 7 ½”].

SHAPE SHOULDER: 
At arm edge, bind off 10 sts at beg of next row; then every other row twice more. 

Work other side to correspond, reverse shaping.

SLEEVES: 
With #3 needles, cast on 62 [62, 70] sts. 

Work in k 1, p 1 ribbing for 3”, inc 1 st at beg of last row. 

Change to #5 needles & patt.

1ST ROW [WRONG SIDE]:  [P 3 tog, then k into front, back & front of next st] 6 [6, 7] times, k 3, p 9, k 3,
p 3 tog, then k into front, back & front of next st] 6 [6, 7] times.

2ND ROW:  P 27 [27, 31], k 9, p 27 [27, 31]. 

Cont to work in patt as established, keep 9 centre sts in cable patt & inc 1 st each end every 6th [6th, 8th] row until there are 87 [91, 95] sts. 

Work even until 17” [17 ½”, 18”] from beg or desired length to underarm, end with odd row.

SHAPE CAP: 
Bind off 5 [6, 7] sts at beg of next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 st each end every other row until 53 [49, 45] sts rem. 

Dec 1 st each end every row until 33 sts rem. 

Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 6 rows. 

Bind off rem 21 sts.

FINISHING: 
Sew shoulder seams.

NECKBAND: 
With right side facing, & with dp needles, pick up & k 96 [98, 110] sts around entire neck edge, incl sts from holders. 

Work in k 1, p 1 ribbing for 1”. 

Bind off loosely in ribbing. 

Sew underarms & sleeve seams. 

Sew in sleeves.
