Vintage 1945 Mother’s Bed Jacket & Baby’s Matching Sacque Duo     #1013

This would make a most lovely gift for a mother-to-be.  Also, it’s the coziest & welcoming gift for that new addition to the family!

SIZE: 
BABY:  Infants
MOTHER:  Sizes 16 & 18.  Directions are for size 16 with changes for size 18 in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Chadwicks Red Heart Baby Wool [3/4 oz balls]:
BABY’S SACQUE – 3 balls
MOTHER’S BED JACKET:  9 [11] balls
J & P Clarks ONT Six Strand Embroidery Floss, 2 skeins, white
Pair Knitting Needles #4 [3 ½ mm]
1 yd Ribbon ½” wide
1 ¼” yds Ribbon 1” wide

GAUGE:
7 sts = 1”
9 rows = 1”

MOTHER’S BED JACKET MEASUREMENTS:
Bust:  36” [38”]
Length from shoulder to lower edge [including 1” hem allowance]:  19” [19”]
Length from lower edge to underarm [including 1” hem allowance]:  10 ½” [10 ½”]
Length of sleeve seam [including 1” hem allowance]:  13” [13”]
Width of sleeve at upper arm:  16” [16”]

BABY’S SACQUE:
Starting at lower edge, cast on 154 sts.

Work in stockinette st, also called st st,  [k 1 row, p 1 row] for 1”, ending with k row.

NEXT ROW:  K across, thus forming ridge on right side.

Cont in st st as before until piece meas 2”, ending with p row.

Work border as follows:
1ST ROW:  [K 2 tog] twice; * [o, k 1] 3 times; o, [ k 2 tog] 4 times.  Rep from * across to last 7 sts, o, k 1] 3 times; o, [k 2 tog] twice.

2ND ROW:  K across.

Rep 1st & 2nd rows of border once more.

Cont in st st as before until piece meas 7 ½”, ending with p row.

NEXT ROW:  Work across 37 sts [right front], bind off next 4 sts for underarm, work across next 72 sts  [back], bind off next 4 sts for underarm, work across rem 37 sts [left front].

Work over this last set of sts only, dec 1 st at armhole edge on every other row until 34 sts rem.

NEXT ROW:  Start at armhole edge, with right side facing you, p 2, [k 2, p 2] 4 times; k 16.

FOLLOWING ROW:  P 16, k 2, [p 2, k 2] 4 times.

Rep last 2 rows alternately until piece meas 2 ½” from 1st row of armhole shaping.

Then, start at front edge, bind off 16 sts for front of neck, work in ribbing across rem of row.

Cont in ribbing over rem 18 sts until piece meas 3 ½” from 1st row of armhole shaping.  Bind off in ribbing.

Attach yarn & work across 72 sts of back, dec 1 st at end of each row until 66 sts rem.

NEXT ROW:  With right side facing you, work as follows:  P 2, [k 2, p 2] 4 times; k 30, p 2, [k 2, p 2] 4 times.

FOLLOWING ROW:  K 2, [p 2, k 2] 4times; p 30, k 2, [p 2, k 2] 4 times.

Rep last 2 rows alternately until piece meas 3 1/2” from 1st row of armhole shaping.

Bind off, knitting k sts & purling p sts.

Attach yarn & work across rem 34 sts of right front to corres with left front.

SLEEVES:
Start at lower edge, cast on 55 sts.

Work same as lower part of sacque until piece meas 8”.

SHAPE TOP:
Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows.
Dec 1 st at end of next 6 rows.  Bind off.

ASSEMBLING:
Press pieces thru damp cloth.

Sew shoulder & sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves, easing in extra fullness at top of shoulder.

Turn up lower edges of sleeves & sacque [at ridges] & whip in place.

With right side facing you, work row of sc along front & neck edges.  Fasten off.

BEADING:
With right side facing you, attach yarn at neck edge of right front & work as follows:  Ch 5, * sc in 3rd ch from hk [p made], ch 1, sk 2 sc, dc in next sc, ch 3.  Rep from * along neck edge.  Fasten off.

YOKE SMOCKING:
Thread needle with Six Strand & work 3 overcast sts, catching 2 knit ribs.  Overcast next 2 knit ribs tog.

Work rows of smocking on all ribbed sections, have ¾” bet rows & staggering smocking sts.

FINISHING:
Run narrow ribbon thru beading at neck.

MOTHER’S BED JACKET:
Start at lower edge, cast on 253 [264] sts.

Work exactly same as sacque until piece meas 10 ½” in all, end with p row.

NEXT ROW:  Work across for right front 59 [61] sts bind off for underarm next 8 [10] sts; for back, work across next 119 [122] sts; bind off for other underarm next 8 [10] sts; for left front, work across rem 59 [61] sts.

Work over this last set of sts only, dec 1 st at armhole edge on every other row until there rem 51 [52] sts.

NEXT ROW:  Start at armhole edge with right side facing you, p 2, [k 2, p 2] 7 times; k 17 [18] sts.

FOLLOWING ROW:  P 17 [18] sts, k 2, [p 2, k 2] 7 times.

Rep last 2 rows alternately until piece meas 6 ½” from 1st row of armhole shaping.
Start at front edge, bind off for front of neck, 21 [22] sts, complete row in ribbing.

Cont in ribbing over rem 30 sts until piece meas 8 ½” from 1st row of armhole shaping.  Bind off in ribbing.

For back, attach yarn & work across next 119 [122] sts, dec 1 st at end of each row until there rem 103 [104] sts.

NEXT ROW:  With right side facing, work as follows:  P 2, [k 2, p 2] 7 times; knit 43 [44] sts, p 2, [k 2, p 2] 7 times.

FOLLOWING ROW:  K 2, [p 2, k 2] 7 times; purl 43 [44] sts, k 2, [p 2, k 2] 7 times.

Rep last 2 rows alternately until piece meas 8 ½” from 1st row of armhole shaping.

Bind off, knitting k sts, & purling p sts.

Attach yarn & work across rem 59 [61] sts of right front to correspond with left front.

SLEEVES:
Start at lower edge, cast on 121 sts.

Work same as lower part of sacque until piece meas 13”.

SHAPE TOP:
Bind off at beg of next 2 rows 4 [5] sts.

Dec 1 st at end of each row until 93 sts rem.  Bind off.

Finish Bed Jacket same as Sacque.
