Vintage 1944 Fancy Crochet Dress #C197

Start at the neck to crochet this dress in an easy, jiffy stitch…after the yoke, no increasing or decreasing is necessary.  This will become one of your favorite patterns!

SIZES:  2 & 4. 
Directions for size 2 with changes for size 4 in brackets.

MATERIALS:
J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 3 balls of White or 4 [5] balls of any color
#6 Steel Crochet Hook
4 Small Pearl Buttons

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Length from shoulder to bottom of skirt:  14” [16”]
Width at hem:                                            42” [48”]

GAUGE:  [YOKE]: 
10 sc = 1”;   
4 rows = ¾”


YOKE: 
Starting at neck edge, ch 99 [102] to meas 12” [12 ½”].

1ST ROW:  2 Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * sc in next 4 ch, 2 sc in next ch.  Rep from * across.  There are in all 118 [122] sc.  Ch 4, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sk 1st sc, * dc in next sc, ch 1, sk 1 sc.  Rep from * across, end with dc in last sc.  There are in all 59 [61] sps.  Ch 1, turn.

3RD ROW:  Sc in 1st dc, * sc in sp, sc in next dc.  Rep from * across, inc 19 [20] sc evenly apart.  [NOTE:  TO INC A SC, MAKE 2 SC IN 1 SP.]  Ch 4, turn. 

Rep 2nd & 3rd rows alternately until 8 [10] rows are made.

NEXT ROW:  Rep 3rd row.  There are in all 194 [222] sc. 
Now work as follows:
1ST ROW:  Ch 4, tr in 2nd sc & in each sc across.  Ch 4, turn.

2ND ROW:  Tr in next tr, * sk 1 tr, in next tr make 5 tr with ch 1 between trs [shell is made], tr in next 2 tr, shell in next tr, tr in next 2 tr.  Rep from * across, end with tr in last 2 tr.  There are in all 55 [63] shells.  Ch 4, turn.

3RD ROW:  Tr in next tr, * shell in center st of next shell [shell over shell is made], tr in next 2 tr.  Rep from * across.  Ch 4, turn.

Rep 3rd row until piece meas 4 ½” [5”] deep inc Yoke; turn, omit turning ch at end of last row.

WORK IS NOW DONE IN RNDS.

1ST RND:  Sl st in next tr, ch 4, * shell over next shell, sk next 2 tr of shell, tr in next 2 tr.  Rep from * around, end with tr in last tr, sk turning ch below, sl st in 4th st of ch-4 1st made on this rnd.  Ch 4, turn.

NEXT RND:  Tr in next tr, * shell over next shell, sk next 2 tr of shell, tr in next 2 tr.  Rep from * around, end with shell, sl st in 4th st of ch-4.  Ch 4, turn.

FOLLOWING RND:  Shell over next shell & work in pat until 9 [10] shells in all are made; make tr in next tr [this is Right Back], sk next tr & next 9 [11] shells & the following tr for Right Sleeve, make tr in next tr, shell over next shell & cont in pat until 19 [21] shells more are made; make tr in next tr [Front Section], sk next tr & next 9 [11] shells & the following tr [Left Sleeve]; make tr in next tr, & work in pat across rem [Left Back], end with tr in last tr.  Join. 

Work in rnds over these 37 [41] shells turning at end of each rnd as before until dress meas 12” [14”] from bottom of Yoke, or length desired.  Fasten off.

SLEEVES: 
Work in pat over sleeve sections for 2 rnds, joining rnds & turning at end of each rnd as before.

BAND: 
Work 3 rnds of sc, hold work in to meas about 6 ½” [7”].  Fasten off.

FINISHING: 
Work a row of sc along back opening, making 4 ch-6 loops on right side. 

Sew buttons to correspond.
