Vintage 1938 Chic Short-Sleeved Sweater #1004

Let us introduce you to the newest & smartest hand-knit that ever slipped off a designer’s needles.  

Easy to knit & good to look at, this chic little jumper is really irresistible.

It’s the kind of jumper that every fashion-wise woman could do with in her wardrobe. 

It can be worn on cool afternoons & evenings in the home; under a tailored, lightweight suit for shopping or travelling.

You may work it in the attractive colors as suggested, or in any two colors you desire.

  

MATERIALS:
11 oz of 2-ply crochet wool, rust brown
1 oz of 2-ply crochet wool, dark blue
Pair Knitting Needles #12
Medium Crochet Hook
13 Buttons

MEASUREMENTS:
Length from top of shoulder:  21”
Bust:  36”
Length of sleeve seam:  6”

TENSION:
10 sts & 12 rows = 1”

BACK:

Using #12 needles & rust wool cast on 148 sts [k into back of cast on sts].

Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 3”, then work in patt at follows:
1^ST ROW:  RIGHT SIDE:  * P 1, f, p 3, p 2 tog, p 3, f, rep from * last 8 sts, p 8.

2^ND & ALL EVEN ROWS:  K.

3^RD ROW:  Rep 1^st row.

5^TH ROW:  Rep 1^st row.

7^TH ROW:  Rep 1^st row.

9^TH ROW:  P 2 tog, * p 3, f, p 1, f, p 3, p 3 tog, rep from * to last 6 sts, p 3, f, p 3.

11^TH ROW:  Rep 9^TH row.

13^TH ROW:  Rep 9^TH row.

15^TH ROW:  Rep 9^TH row.

16^TH ROW:  Rep 2^nd row.

These 16 rows form patt & are repeated throughout.

Cont in patt & inc 1 st each end of 25^th row & every 7^th row following 14 times.

When work meas 13 ½”, shape armholes by casting off 3 sts at beg of next 12 rows, then work even in patt until armhole meas 7 ½”, then shape shoulders by casting off 3 sts at beg of every row until 48 sts rem.  Cast off.

FRONT:
The lower border runs into point towards centre.  Using #12 needles & rust wool, cast on 148 sts & work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 3”.

Change to patt & in 1^st row k 1^st 29 sts in patt, the following 90 sts in ribbing as lower border, 29 sts in patt.

In each of following rows, inc patt section by 3 sts each side towards centre, so that in the 17^th patt row the ribbed section disappears.

From this point the front is worked in 2 parts as follows:
1^ST ROW:  Work 74 sts in patt, leave on spare needle for left front, working 74 sts in patt.

Cont in patt as for back, inc 1 st at seam edge of 25^th row & every 7^th row following 11 times.

When work meas 13 ½”, shape armhole by casting off 3 sts every 2^nd row at armhole edge 6 times, then work even in patt until armhole meas 7 ½”, then shape shoulder by casting off 3 sts at armhole edge of every 2^nd row until 24 sts rem.

Cast off 24 sts, which are later turned back to form rever.

FACING:
Cast on 3 sts & work in stockingette st [k 1 row, p 1 row].

In 3^rd row & every 3^rd row hereafter, inc 1 st on edge where you beg, until there are 28 sts on needle, cast off.

This facing is sewn & turned into rever; the p side is the right side.

LEFT FRONT:
Join wool at sts left on spare needle & work to correspond with right front, working shaping at opposite end of row.

SLEEVES:  [BOTH ALIKE]:
Using #12 & rust wool cast on 112 sts [k into back of cast on sts] & work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1 ½”.

Change to patt & work as for back, inc 1 st at each end of 11^th row & every 7^th row following 7 times.

When sleeve meas 6”, shape top by casting off 3 sts at beg of next 8 rows, then dec 1 st each end of every 2^nd row 10 times, then dec 1 st each end of every row until 16 sts rem.  Cast off.

BOWS:
Each one consists of a straight strip, which is held tog in centre with a knitted lp.

For each one, using rust wool, cast on 48 sts & work in stockinette st for 11”.  Cast off.

LOOPS:
With blue wool cast on 16 sts & work in same manner as bow for 1 ½”.  Cast off.

The purled side of both bows & loops form the right side.

FINISHING:
Join shoulders, sew up side & sleeve seams; sew in sleeves, gathering at shoulder.

Sew on bows at shown in photo.

Sew buttons down the front as shown in photo.

Stitch facing to revers & press into position.
