1939 Sand Piper Two-Piece Dress Suit #104

This is a jaunty two-piece dress with a wide swinging skirt and tight-waisted jacket.

SIZE:  16

MATERIALS: 
Royal Society Beau-Marl, 14 skeins [2 oz skeins].
Milward’s Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair each #1 [2 ½ mm size] & #2
[2 ¾ mm size].
Circular Knitting Pin #2 [2 ¾ mm size].    
Milward’s Steel Crochet Hook #6.
6“ Zipper.       
30” Belting.      
16” Silk Seam Tape.    
6 Buttons.

MEASUREMENTS AFTER BLOCKING:
JACKET: 
Bust--36”. 
Length from top of shoulder--20”. 
Length of sleeve,
Underarm sleeve--3”.
SKIRT: 
Waist--28”. 
Hips--37”. 
Length of skirt--29”. 
Width at hem--64”.

GAUGE: 
8 sts = 1”;
10 rows = 1” [#2 Needles].

JACKET:BACK: 
Start at bottom, with #1 needles cast on 117 sts.

1st Row:  * P 5, k3.  Rep from * across, end with p 5.

2nd Row:  * K 5, p 3.  Rep from * across, end with k 5.

3rd & 4th Rows:  Rep 1st & 2nd rows.

5th Row:  * P 5, O, k 3, pass O over 3 sts just knitted.  Rep from * across, end with p 5.

6th Row:  Rep 2nd row. 

These 6 rows constitute patt. 

Work in patt, dec 1 st at both ends of next row & every 6th row thereafter until 109 sts rem. 

Work straight until piece meas 3”. 

Change to #2 needles & work in patt for 2”. 

Then inc. 1 st at both ends of next row & every 6th row thereafter until there are 127 sts on needle. 

Work straight until piece meas 10 ½” in all.

TO SHAPE ARMHOLES: 
Bind off 4 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows. 

Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 103 sts rem. 

Work straight until piece meas 3” from 1st row of armhole shaping. 

Now work in st st [k 1 row, p 1 row], purled side being right side of work, until piece meas 7” from 1st row of armhole shaping. 

To shape shoulders, bind off 5 sts at beg of each row until 43 sts rem.  Bind off tightly.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Start at bottom, with #1 needles cast on 68 sts.

1st Row:  P 20, * k 3, p 5.  Rep from * across.

2nd Row:  * K 5, p 3.  Rep from * 5 more times, k 20.

3rd & 4th Rows:  Rep 1st and 2nd rows.

5th Row:  P 20, * O, k 3, pass O over 3 sts just knitted, p 5.  Rep from * across.

6th Row:  Rep 2nd row. 

Hereafter work in patt, keep 20 sts at center front in st st [purled side is right side] until piece meas 3”. 

Change to #2 needles & make buttonhole 6 sts in from front edge on next row & every 2 ½” thereafter until 6 buttonholes in all are made--to make a buttonhole, on 1 row bind off 6 sts.

On next row, cast on 6 sts to replace those bound off; at same time, when piece meas 5”, inc. 1 st at underarm edge on next row & 1 row every inch thereafter until there are 74 sts on needle. 

Work straight until piece meas 12” in all.

TO SHAPE ARMHOLE: 
Start at underarm edge, bind off 8 sts. 

Then dec. 2 sts at armhole edge every other row until 56 sts rem. 

Work straight until piece meas 3” from 1st row of armhole shaping. 

Hereafter work in st st for ¾”. 

Then, start at front edge, bind off 6 sts.  Cont in st st until piece meas 5” from 1st row of armhole shaping. 

Then, start at front edge, bind off 6 sts [thus start neck shaping]. 

Then dec 1 st at neck edge every row until 30 sts rem. 

Work straight until piece meas 7” from 1st row of armhole shaping. 

Shape shoulder by binding off 5 sts at armhole edge every other row 6 times.  Break off.

LEFT FRONT: 
Work as for Right Front, reverse shapings & omit buttonholes.

SLEEVES: 
Starting at bottom,.with No. 1 needles cast on 88 sts and work in stockinet st for 1 inch. 

Change to No. 2 needles and continue as before, increasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every other row thereafter until there are 104 sts on needle. 

To shape top of sleeve, bind off 6 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows & 2 sts at beg of each of following 4 rows. 

Then dec 1 st at end of each row until 44 sts rem. 

Then bind off 3 sts at beg of each row until 8 sts rem.  Bind off.

Sew up underarm seams, ease in extra fullness of Fronts 1 ½” down from armhole shaping. 

Sew up shoulder seams. 

Find center of top of sleeve & mark with pin, taking off ½” on each side of pin & graduating it to nothing 1” from top edge. 

Sew darts on wrong side [3 darts in all]. 

Sew up sleeve seams & sew sleeves in. 

Work a row of sc all around edges of jacket. 

Sew seam tape along inside edge of Right Front, bet row of sc & buttonholes. 

Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.

SKIRT: 
Start at bottom, with circular needle cast on 448 sts.  Join, being careful not to twist sts.

1st to 4th Rnds incl:  * P 25, k3.  Rep from * around [16 panels in all].

5th Rnd:  * P 25, O, k 3, pass O over 3 sts just knitted.  Rep from * around.

6th Rnd:  * P 25, k 3.  Rep from * around. 

These 6 rounds constitute the patt. 

Rep patt until piece meas 3”. 

Then * dec. 1 p st in each panel on next rnd. 

Work straight for 3”. 

Rep from * 2 more times [12”]. 

Then ** dec. 1 p st in each panel on next rnd. 

Work straight for 2”. 

Rep from ** once more [16”]. 

Then dec st in each panel every inch until piece meas 22”. 

Hereafter work is done in rows instead of rnds [thus making side opening], dec in each panel every inch until 192 sts rem. 

Work straight until piece meas 28” or desired length.  Bind off loosely.

Sew belting to waistline. 

Sew zipper along side opening. 

Work 2 rows of sc around bottom of skirt.
