Vintage 1945 Sleeveless Cardigan Sweater #991

Button up…you belong to me…Ribbing up to there makes this jerkin smart figuring for the Young Idea in Style!

SIZE:
12, 14 & 16
Directions are for size 12, with changes for 14 & 16 in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Beehive Scotch Fingering Yarn, 3 ply, 1 oz: 8 [9-10] skeins
Pair #1 [2 ½ mm] Knitting Needles
Pair #3 [3 mm] Knitting Needles
1 ½ yds Matching Grosgrain Ribbon
8 Buttons
GAUGE
8 sts = 1”
10 rows = 1”

MEASUREMENTS:
Bust:  32” [34”-36”]
Width across back at underarm:  16” [17”-18”]
Width across each front at underarm:  9 ¾” [10 ¼”-10 ¾”]
Length from shoulder to lower edge:  21” [22”-23”]
Length of side seam:  14” [14 ½”-15”]

BACK:
Start at lower edge with #3 needles, cast on 128 [136-144] sts.
1ST ROW:  K 1, * p 2, k 2.  Rep from * across, end with k 1.
2ND ROW:  P 1, * k 2, p 2.  Rep from * across, end with p 1.
Rep these 2 rows alternately until piece meas 3” [3 ½”-4”].
Change to #1 needles & cont in ribbing until piece meas 6” [6 ½”-7”].
Change to #3 needles & cont in ribbing until piece meas, end with 2nd row, 9” [9 ½”-
10”].

Work in patt as follows:
1ST ROW:  [WRONG SIDE]:  P across.
2ND ROW:  K across.
3RD ROW:  P across.
4TH ROW:  P 1, * k 2, p 2.  Rep from * across, end with p1.
Last 4 rows make up patt.
Work straight in patt until piece meas 14” [14 ½”-15”].
Mark both ends of last row with colored threads [beg of armhole].
Work straight in patt for 1”.
Inc 1 st at both ends of next row & on 1 row every 1” thereafter 5 more times.
Work straight until piece meas from 1st row of armhole 7” [7 ½”-8”].

SHAPE SHOULDERS:
Bind off 5 sts at beg of next 20 [16-12] rows.
Bind off 6 sts at beg of next 0 [4-8] rows.
Bind off rem sts for back of neck.

LEFT FRONT:
Start at lower edge, with #3 needles, cast on 78 [82-86] sts.
1ST ROW:  K 1, * p 2, k 2.  Rep from * across to last 11 sts, k 11.
2ND ROW:  P 11, * k 2, p 2.  Rep from * across, end with p 1.
Keep 11 sts at center front edge in stockinette st [ k 1 row, p 1 row] cont in patt as for back until piece meas 14” [14 ½”-15”].
Mark side edge of last row with colored thread [beg of armhole].
Work straight for 1”.
Inc 1 st at armhole edge on next row & on 1 row every 1” thereafter 5 more times.
At the same time
When piece meas from beg of armhole 5” [5 ½”-5 ½”],

SHAPE NECK edge as follows:
Bind off at center front edge 22 [24-24] sts.
Bind off 2 sts at neck edge every other row 6 [6-7] times.Work until piece meas from 1st row of armhole, end at armhole edge 7” [7 ½”-8”].

SHAPE SHOULDER:
Bind off 5 sts at armhole edge every other row 10 [8-6] times.
Bind off 6 sts at beg of next 0 [2-4] rows.

RIGHT FRONT:
Same as left front, make buttonhole 3 sts in from center front edge when piece meas ¼” [1 ¼”-1/4”] & every 2 ¾” [2 ¾”-3”] thereafter [always meas from 1st row of last buttonhole] until 7 buttonholes total have been made [8th buttonhole is made on Neckband] – to make buttonhole, on 1 row bind off 4 sts & on next row cast on 4 sts to replace those bound off.

NECKBAND:
Sew shoulder seams.
With right side facing, attach yarn to corner of neck edge.
Using #1 needles pick up & knit around neck edge 120 [124-128] sts.
Keep 11 sts at each side in stockinette st, work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1”, make buttonhole in line with last buttonhole.
Bind off loosely in ribbing.

ARMBANDS:
With right side facing, attach yarn at underarm.
Using #1 needles, pick up & knit around armhole edge 128 [136-144] sts.
Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1”.
Bind off loosely in ribbing.

FINISHING:
Block to measurements.
Sew up underarm seams.
Sew ribbon to each side of front.
Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.
