Vintage Miss West Indies Doll #576 - Crochet

A clever woman will very quickly & easily, crochet this exquisite doll, that will become personal favorite to keep or gift to that special person!
  
MATERIALS:
J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, Art #A64, 2 balls red; 1 ball white & few yds of blue
#7 Steel Crochet Hook
Ethnic Doll 8” tall, chest 4 ½”
Hook & Eye
Small Snap Fasteners
2 Small Rings [for earrings]

ABBREVIATIONS:
CH      =          Chain

SKIRT: 
Start at bottom with red, make ch 50”.

1ST ROW:  Tr in 5th ch from hk & in next 2 ch [bl made], * ch 4, sk 4 ch, tr in next 4 ch [another bl made].  Rep from * across until there are 36 bls, ch 4.  Break off.  Cut off rem ch, leave 4 chs at end of row.

2ND ROW:  Attach white to starting chain at beg of row, * ch 4, make tr in next 4 ch on foundation ch (this makes checkerboard design).  Rep from * across, end with tr in last 4 ch.   Break off.

3RD ROW:  Attach white to same place at beg of row, ch 4, work over prev white ch make tr in next 3 tr, * ch 4, sk next 4 tr, work over prev white ch make tr in next 4 tr.  Rep from * across, end with ch 4.  Break off.

4TH ROW:  Attach red to starting ch at beg of row, * ch 4, work over prev red ch make tr in next 4 tr.  Rep from * across end with tr in last 4 tr.  Break off.

5TH ROW:  Attach red to same place at beg of row & work as for 3rd row, make red blocks over white blocks.

6TH ROW:  Attach white to starting ch at beg of row & work as for 4th row, make white blocks over red blocks.  Work in patt until piece meas 6”.  Break off.

Sew narrow ends tog, leaving a 1 ½” opening at top.

WAISTBAND:
1ST ROW:  Attach red to 1st st at top of skirt, sc in same place, * work off next 2 sc as 1 sc [1 sc dec].  Rep from * across.  Ch 1, turn.

2ND & 3RD ROWS:  Sc in first sc, * work off next 2 sc as 1 sc.  Rep from * across.  Ch 1, turn.

4TH ROW:  Sc in each sc across, sc closely across back opening, sl st in first sc. Break off.

Sew hook & eye to opening.

BLOUSE: 
Start at neck with white, ch 28.

1ST ROW:  Dc in 4th ch from hk, * dc in next ch, 2 dc in next ch.  Rep from * across.  Ch 3, turn.

2ND, 3RD & 4TH ROWS:  Dc in 1st dc, * dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc.  Rep from * across, dc in top of turning ch.  Ch 3, turn [91 dc on 4th row].

5TH ROW:  Sk 1st dc, dc in next 9 dc, sk 24 dc for armhole, dc in next 23 dc across front, sk next 24 dc for other armhole, dc in each rem dc & top of turning ch. Ch 3, turn.

6TH ROW:  Sk 1st dc, dc in each dc across, dec 8 dc evenly across [to dec 1 dc, work off 2 dc as 1 dc]. Break off.

SLEEVE: 
1ST RND:  Attach thread at armhole, dc closely around, dec 3 dc across underarm. Join.

2ND RND:  Ch 3, dc in each dc around, dec 8 dc evenly around. Join.

3RD RND:  Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join.

4TH RND:  Ch 3, dc in each dc around, dec 6 dc evenly around. Join.

5TH RND:  Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join.

6TH RND:  Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, * dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc.  Rep from * around.  Join and break off. 

Attach thread to other armhole & complete other sleeve to correspond.

Attach thread to 1st st at neck, sc in same place, * ch 3, sk 1 st, sc in next st.  Rep from * across.  Break off. 

Sew 2 small snap fasteners to back.

APRON: 
With white, make ch 18” long.

1ST ROW:  Dc in 4th ch from hk & in each ch across.  Break off.

2ND ROW:  Mark off 11 sts on each side of center st.  Attach thread to 1st dc marked, ch 3, dc in each dc across to next marker.  Ch 3, turn.

3RD ROW:  2 Dc in 1st dc, 3 dc in each dc across, 3 dc in top of turning chain.  Ch 3, turn.

4TH ROW:  Sk 1st dc, dc in each dc across & in top of turning ch.  Ch 3, turn.

Rep last row until piece meas 3 ¼”.

NEXT ROW:  Sk 1st dc, dc in back lp of each dc across, dc in top of turning ch. Ch 3, turn.

[Frill to be worked later across front lps of row.]

FOLLOWING ROW:  Sk 1st dc, dc in each dc across, dc in top of turning ch.  Ch 3, turn.

Rep last row until piece meas 4 ¾” in all. 

At end of last row, ch 1, turn.

BOTTOM EDGING: 
1ST ROW:  Sc in each dc across & in top of turning ch.  Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sc in 1st sc, * ch 3, sk 2 sc, sc in next sc.  Rep from * across.  Turn.

3RD ROW:  Sl st in 1st lp, sc in same lp, * ch 3, sc in next lp.  Rep from * across.  Ch 6, turn.

4TH ROW:  Tr in 1st lp, in each lp across make tr, ch 2 & tr.  Ch 1, turn.

5TH ROW:  Sc in 1st sp, * ch 3, sc in next sp.  Rep from * across.  Turn.

6TH ROW:  Rep 3rd row.  Break off.

FRILL: 
1ST ROW:  Attach white to 1st lp on dc row marked for frill, sc in same place, * ch 5, sk 2 sts, sc in next st.  Rep from * across.  Ch 5, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sc in 1st lp, * ch 5, sc in next lp.  Rep from * across.  Break off.  Turn.

3RD ROW:  Attach blue to 1st sc, ch 5, dc in same sc, * ch 1, hold back on hk last lp of each dc, make dc in next 2 lps, yo & draw thru all lps on hk [joint-dc made], ch 1, in next sc make dc, ch 2 & dc.  Rep from * across, end with dc, ch 2 & dc in last sc.  Ch 1, turn.

4TH ROW:  Sc in 1st dc, * sc in next sp, sc in next dc, ch 7, sk next joint-dc, sc in next dc. Rep from * across, end with sc in 3rd ch of start ch-5.  Break off.

COLLAR: 
Start at back with blue, ch 2.

1ST ROW:  3 Sc in 2nd ch from hk. Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  2 Sc in 1st sc [1 sc inc], sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc.  Ch 1, turn.

3RD THRU 13TH ROWS:  Sc in each sc across, inc 1 sc at each end of row. Ch 1, turn.

TO SHAPE FRONT: 
1ST ROW:  Dec 1 sc, sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  2 Sc in 1st sc, sc in each sc across to within last 2 sc, dec 1 sc. Ch 1, turn.

3RD THRU 14TH ROWS:  Rep 1st & 2nd rows. 

Dec 1 sc at beg of each row until 3 sc rem.

Work off last 3 sc as 1 sc.  Break off. 

Attach thread to opposite side & work other front to correspond. 

Sew snap fastener in place.

KERCHIEF: 
Start with red, work as for Collar until 13 rows have been completed.

14TH THRU 23RD ROWS:  Cont inc 1 sc at both ends of each row. 

Break off at end of 23rd row. 

Sew around head to form kerchief. 

Sew small ring to each side of kerchief to represent earrings.

BAG: 
Start at bottom with red, ch 2.

1ST RND:  6 Sc in 2nd ch from hk.

2ND RND:  2 Sc in each sc around.

3RD & 4TH RNDS:  Inc 6 sc evenly around.

5TH THRU 9TH RNDS:  Sc in each sc around.
10TH RND:  Sl st in next sc, ch 4, * sk 1 sc, dc in next sc, ch 1.  Rep from * around.  Join & break off.

With red make ch 3” long. 

Lace through sps on bag & fasten ends securely. 

Stuff bag firmly with red thread. 

Attach ch to doll's arm.

PANTIES: 
Start at waist make ch long enough to reach around widest part of doll.  Join, be careful not to twist.

1ST THRU 4TH RNDS:  Ch 3, dc in each st around.  Join.

FOR 11“ DOLLS WORK 9 RNDS [INSTEAD OF 4 RNDS]

Ch 4 for crotch & sl st directly opposite.  Break off. 

Draw cord thru sts of 1st rnd.

PETTICOAT: 
Cut strip of 6“ crinoline hemline binding 18” long. 

Gather across one long side to fit around doll's waist. 

Sew back seam, leaving 1“ opening at top. 

Sew bias binding around top. 

Sew hook & eye at back. 

Turn up hem to correspond with length of skirt.
