Vintage 1950s Miss Virginia Doll #577 - Crochet

A clever woman will very quickly & easily, crochet this exquisite doll with matching hat, & panties, which will become a personal favorite to keep or gift to that special person! 

MATERIALS:

J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, Art #A64, 3 balls of blue,

J. & P. Coats Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, Art. #A104, Size 30,: 1 ball of pink.

#7 & #10 Steel Crochet Hooks

Doll, 8” tall, chest 4 ½“

ABBREVIATIONS:

CH      =          Chain

SKIRT: 

Start at waist with blue & #7 hk, make ch 4 ½” long.

1^ST ROW:  Tr in 5^th ch from hk, 2 tr in each ch across.  Ch 4, turn.

NOW WORK IN RNDS AS FOLLOWS:

1^ST RND:  Sk 1^st tr, * 2 tr in next tr [1 tr inc], tr in next tr. Rep from * across, end with 2 tr in top of ch.  Join with sl st to top of ch-4.

2^ND RND:  Ch 4, tr in next tr, * 2 tr in next tr, tr in next 2 tr.  Rep from * around.  Join.

3^RD, 4^TH & 5^TH RNDS:  Work as for last rnd, have 1 tr more bet incs on each rnd.

Work without inc until skirt meas 6 ½”.  Break off.

BODICE: 

1^ST ROW:  Attach blue to 1^st ch at waist, sc in same ch, sc in each ch across.

Ch 1, turn.

2^ND THRU 5^TH ROWS:  Sc in each sc across.  Ch 1, turn.

6^TH ROW:  Sc in each sc, inc 4 sc evenly across [to inc 1 sc, make 2 sc in 1 sc].  Ch 1, turn.

7^TH ROW:  Rep 2^nd row.

8^TH ROW:  Rep 6^th row.

9^TH & 10^TH ROWS:  Rep 2^nd row.  Break off at end of 10^th row.

SHAPE SHOULDER: 

Place pin as marker at center front of Bodice.

1^ST ROW:  Attach blue to sc marked, sc in same sc & in next 8 sc [armhole edge].  Ch 1, turn.

2^ND ROW:  Sc in each sc across to within last 2 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc [1 sc dec).  Ch 1, turn.

3^RD ROW:  Sc in each sc across, inc 1 sc in last sc.  Ch 1, turn.

4^TH THRU 7^TH ROWS:  Rep 2^nd & 3^rd  rows 2 more times.

8^TH ROW:  Rep 2^nd row.

9^TH & 10^TH ROWS:  Sc in each sc across.  Ch 1, turn.

11^TH THRU 16^TH ROWS:  Rep 2^nd & 3^rd rows 3 more times.  Break off at end of 16^th row.

Sew 9 sc of last row to first 9 sc on one side of back of Bodice.

Attach thread to first free sc following marker on Front & work other shoulder in same way.

Sew snap fasteners to back opening on Bodice.

PEPLUM: 

With Pink & #10 hk, make ch long enough to reach around waist.

1^ST ROW:  Sc in 2^nd ch from hk & in each ch across.  Ch 1, turn.

2^ND ROW:  Sc in 1^st sc, * draw lp on hk out to meas ⅛”, yo & draw lp thru, insert hk bet single & double lps & draw lp thru, yo & draw thru 2 lps on hk [knot st made], make

another knot st, sc in next sc.  Rep from * across.  Make 3 knot sts.  Turn.

3^RD THRU 12^TH ROWS:  * Sc under double lp of next knot st to right of knot, sc under double lp of next knot st to left of same knot, make 2 knot sts.  Rep from * across.  Make 3 knot sts.  Turn.  Break off at end of 12^th row.

NECK RUFFLE: 

With pink make row of knot sts long enough to fit around neck & meet at waist.  Make 2 more knot sts.

1^ST ROW:  Sc in knot bet 3^rd & 4^th knot sts from hk, make 2 knot sts, sc in next knot.  Make 3 knot sts.  Turn.

2^ND, 3^RD & 4^TH ROWS:  Rep 3^rd row of Peplum.  Break off at end of 4^th row.

HAT: 

With blue make ch 4 ¾” long.  Join with sl st to form ring.

1^ST RND:  2 Sc in each ch around.  Join.

2^ND RND:  Ch 1, sc in each sc around.  Join. 

Rep 2^nd rnd until piece meas 1 ½” from starting ch.  Break off. 

Make pleat in each side of Hat. 

Sew flower to side of Hat.

HAT TRIMMING: 

With blue, ch 2.

1^ST RND:  8 Sc in 2^nd ch from hk.  Join & break off.

2^ND RND:  Attach pink to any sc, sc in same place, * [make 2 knot sts, sc in same sc] twice; make 2 knot sts, sc in next sc.  Rep from * around.  Join & break off. 

Sew to Hat.

Line Neck Ruffle & Peplum with net, making lining for Peplum slightly smaller than Peplum so that it will be puffed. 

Sew ends of Neck Ruffle to front of Peplum. 

Cut ½ yd of ribbon in half & sew piece to each side of Neck Ruffle. 

-Tie into a bow

PANTIES: 

Start at waist make ch long enough to reach around widest part of doll.  Join, be careful not to twist.

1^ST THRU 4^TH RNDS:  Ch 3, dc in each st around.  Join.

FOR 11“ DOLLS WORK 9 RNDS [INSTEAD OF 4 RNDS]. 

Ch 4 for crotch & sl st directly opposite.  Break off. 

Draw cord thru sts of 1^st rnd.

PETTICOAT: 

Cut strip of 6“ crinoline hemline binding 18” long. 

Gather across one long side to fit around doll's waist. 

Sew back seam, leaving 1“ opening at top. 

Sew bias binding around top. 

Sew hook & eye at back. 

Turn up hem to correspond with length of skirt.
