Vintage 1938 Sun Dress & Bolero #144 - Knit

“Beau Catcher” Figure molding flattery -- this enchanting two-piece costume knitted of fine Ripple knit.  Sleeveless sun back dress with a wonderful swirl skirt.  New “bosom length” bolero, very gay and becoming.



MATERIALS: 
Brook’s ripple knit, 13 skeins of main color [ MC ] and 5 skeins of a contrasting color [ CC ] for bolero
Pair #3 [ 3 mm size] knitting needles       
Pair #1 [ 2 ½  mm size] knitting needles
#3 [ 3 mm size ] circular knitting needle  
#4 crochet hook      
3 buttons
30 inches belting                                        
7 inch zipper
2-piece buckle                                             
3 yds silk binding

GAUGE: 
6 sts = 1 inch;
9 rows = 1 inch.

MEASUREMENTS: 
Dress:  Bust - 34 ins.  Length from top of shoulder to waistline - 15 ½ ins. 
Waist - 28 ins.  Hips - 36 ins.  Length of skirt 29 ins.  Width at hem - 51 ins.
Bolero:  Bust - 34 ins.  Length from top of shoulder - 13 ½ ins.  Length of sleeve, underarm seam - 4 ½ ins.

DRESS:
Blouse Front: 
Starting at bottom, with #3 straight needles and MC cast on 94 sts, and work in stockinet st [ k 1 row, p 1 row ] for 1 in. 

Then increase 1 st at both ends of next row and every 6th row thereafter until there are 112 sts on needle. 

Work straight until piece measures 7 ½ ins. 

To shape armholes: 
Bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. 

Then bind off 2 sts at beginning of following 4 rows. 

Now dec 1 st at end of each row until 78 sts remain. 

Work straight until piece measures 4 ins from 1st row of armhole shaping. 

On next row, with right side of work toward you, k 24 sts, bind off 30 sts [ thus starting neck shaping ], and k across remaining 24 sts. 

Hereafter work over these 24 sts only until piece measures 7 ins from 1st row of armhole shaping.

To shape shoulder, starting armhole edge, bind off 6 sts every other row until all sts are worked off. 

Attach yarn at opposite side of neck edge and work to correspond.

Right Back: 
Starting at bottom, cast on 48 sts and  work in stockinet st, increasing 1 st at beginning of every 6th row [ underarm side ] only, until there are 54 sts on needle, but making a buttonhole 3 sts in from center back edge, after the first 1 ½ ins and every 2 ins thereafter, until 3 buttonholes in all are made [ to make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 4 sts; then, on next row, cast 4 sts to replace those bound off ]. 

Work straight until piece measures 6 ins. 

Then, starting at center back, bind off 16 sts [ thus shaping back ]. 

Work over remaining 38i sts until piece measures 6 ½ ins.

To shape armhole: 
Starting at underarm, bind off 5 sts once. 

Then dec 1 st at armhole edge every other row until 24 sts remain. 

Work straight until piece measures 7 ins from 1st row of armhole shaping; then shape shoulder as before.

Left Back: 
Work to correspond with Right Back, reversing shapings and omitting buttonholes.

Pockets:  With CC and #1 needles cast on 24 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 4 rows. 

Drop CC, attach main color and work for 2 rows. 

Pick up CC and work 2 more rows. 

Repeat these last 4 rows 2 more times. 

Then work as follows:  Make 2 rows of MC, 1 row of CC. 

Repeat these 3 rows once more.

Then work 3 rows of MC, 1 row of CC, and 3 rows of MC.  Bind off. 

Make another same as this. 

Sew up shoulder seams. 

Sew up side seams, easing in the extra fullness of Front 1 ½ ins down from armhole shaping, and leaving a 2 in opening on left side. 

Overlap the center Backs 1 in and sew together at lower edge. 

Make a narrow hem all around edges of blouse and around armholes, omitting lower edge. 

Place pockets on as in illustration, and sew in place. 

Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.

Belt
Starting at one end, with #1 needles and CC cast on 146 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2 rows; drop CC, attach MC and work 2 rows. 

Repeat these 4 rows until belt is desired width, ending with 2 rows of CC.  Bind off loosely.

Skirt: 
Starting at bottom, with circular needle and MC cast on 310 sts.  Join, being careful not to twist sts. 

Work in stockinette st [ k each rnd ] for 4 ins. 

Then on next rnd dec 10 sts at equal distances apart. 
*  Work 3 ins straight. 

On next rnd dec 10 sts as before but do not have decreases fall directly over those of previous rnd.  Repeat from * 2 more times. 

** Work 2 ins straight.  Then dec 10 sts as before.  Repeat from ** 3 more times [ 230 sts ]. 

Work 1 in straight.  

Hereafter dec 10 sts on next rnd and one rnd every inch thereafter until 170 sts remain but, when piece measures 24 ins, work in rows instead of rnds [ k 1 row, p 1 row ], thus forming side opening. 

Work straight for length desired.   Bind off. 

Work 2 rows of sc all around bottom of skirt. 

Sew skirt to blouse at waistline. 

Sew zipper along side opening.

BOLERO
Back
Starting at bottom, with #3 straight needles and CC, cast on 50 sts and work in stockinette st, casting on 30 sts at end of each of next 2 rows [ 110 sts ]. 

Work straight until piece measures 5 ½ ins.

To shape armholes
Bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. 

Then dec 1 st at end of each row 14 times; and 1 st at both ends of every 4th row 3 times [ 84 sts ]. 
Work straight until piece measures 7 ins from 1st row of armhole shaping.

To shape shoulders: 
Bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until 30 sts remain.  Bind off.

Right Front: 
Starting at bottom, cast on 54 sts and work in stockinette st for 3 ins. 

Then dec 1 st at front edge, on next row and every 8th row thereafter, 3 times in all [ 52 sts ]. 

Now dec 1 st at front edge every 12th row 3 times. 

Work straight but, when underarm measures 6 ins, shape armhole as follows:
Starting at underarm side, bind off 8 sts once, and 2 sts every other row twice. 

Then dec 1 st every other row 9 times [ 27 sts ]. 

Work straight until piece measures 7 ins from 1st row of armhole shaping.

To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 3 sts every other row until all sts are worked off.

Left Front: 
Work exactly as for Right Front, reversing shapings.

Sleeves: 
Starting at bottom, with CC cast on 72 sts and work in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 10th row, 3 times [ 78 sts ]. 

Work straight until piece measures 4 1/12 ins. 

To shape top of sleeve, bind off 2 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. 

Then dec 1 st at both ends of every 4th row until 52 sts remain. 

Now dec 1 st at both ends of every 4th row until 40 sts remain. 

Then bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 16 sts remain.  Bind off. 

Sew up shoulder seams. 

Sew up underarm seams, easing in the extra fullness of Front 1 ½ ins down from armhole shaping.

Find center top of sleeve and mark with a pin. 

Measure off 1 ½ ins on each side of pin and mark. 

Then measure off 2 ins on each side of these last 2 pins and mark [ 5 pin marks in all ]. 

Make a ½ in dart at each pin, taking off ½ in on each side of each pin, and graduating it into nothing 2 ins from top edge. 

Sew darts on wrong side [ thus making 5 darts ]. 

Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. 

Make a box pleat [ 2 ins long ] at bottom edge of sleeve, making it deep enough to fit the arm of the individual and sew. 

Turn up ½ in hem and sew in place with silk binding all around edges of jacket and bottom of sleeves.
