Vintage 1940’s Town & Country Roller Hat & Bag #314

Materials:  
American Thread Company “Star” Rug yarn Art. #44, 8 skeins
    or “Dawn” Knitting worsted Art. #W11 or #W424, 8 oz.
#6/H Crochet Hook

Hat: 
Ch 3, join to form rind, ch 1 & work 6 sc in ring, do not join rnds. 

Place marker at beg of each rnd.

2nd rnd:  2 Sc in each sc [12 sc].

3rd rnd:  * 1 Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * all around.

4th rnd:  * 1 Sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * all around.

5th rnd:  * 1 Sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * all around [30 sc].

6th to 11th rnds:  Same as last rnd having 1 more st bet inc points in each rnd [6 sts inc in each rnd].

12th rnd:  1 Sc in each sc.

13th rnd:  * 1 Sc in each of the next 10 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * all around [72 sc].  Work 8 rnds even, break yarn.

Brim: 
Ch 22, loosely, sc in 2nd st from hook 1 sc in each of the next 9 sts of ch, 3 sc in next st of ch, 1 sc in each of next 10 sts of ch, ch 1, turn.

2nd row:  Working thru back loop of sts throughout, sk 1 sc, 1 sc in each of next 10 sc, 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 9 sc, sk 1 sc, sc in last sc, ch 1, turn.

Rep 2nd row until there are 30 ridges [60 rows].

Finishing Hat: 
Sew both short ends of brim together [1 end is starting ch & other end is last row] placing the 3 sc directly in corner of starting ch. 

Sew lower edge of brim to lower edge of hat. 

Turn upper edge of brim toward you & sew to center of brim.

Bag:  Main Body Section: 
Ch 63, sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in each remaining st of ch, ch 1, turn.

2nd row:  Working thru back loop of sts only, work 1 sc in each sc, ch 1, turn. 

Rep 2nd row 25 times, break yarn.


Side of Bag: 
Sk 24 sc, attach yarn in next sc, sc in same space, 1 sc in each of next 13 sc working thru back loop of sts only, ch 1, turn.

2nd row:  Working thru back loop of sts only for remainder of bag, work 1 sc in each of 14 sc of 1st row, ch 1, turn.

3rd & 4th rows: Inc 1 sc at beg of each row, ch 1, turn.

5th to 10th rows:  Work even in sc, ch 1 to turn each row.

11th & 12th rows:  Same as 3rd & 4th rows.

13th to 16th rows:  Work even.’

17th & 18th rows:  Same as 3rd & 4th rows [20 sts in last row].

19th to 24th rows:  Work even, break yarn.

2nd Side:  Sk 24 sc, attach yarn in next sc & work same as 1st side. 

Sew each edge of side section to main body section. 

Fold side section in half & sew across top.

Top of Bag: 
Work a row of sl sts around opening of bag [main body section] working 1 sl st in each row, join. 

2nd row:  Ch 5, sk 1 sl st, trc in next sl st, * ch 1, sk 1 sl st, trc in next sl st, rep from * all around, ch 1, join in 4th st of ch [beading].

3rd row:  ch 1 & work 1 sc in each trc & in each ch 1, join.

4th row:  Working thru back loop of sts only, work 2 sc in each sc all around, join.

5th row:  Working thru back loop of sts only, work 1 sc in each sc, join, break yarn.

Cord: 
Ch 80, 1 sl st in 2nd st from hook, 1 sl st in each remaining st of ch, working on opposite side of ch, work 1 sl st in each st, break yarn.

Work another cord in same manner. 

Lace cord thru beading lacing over 1 trc & under next trc. 

Lace 2nd cord in same manner starting from opposite side. 

Sew ends of cord together.
