Vintage 1950s Lovely Lace Motif Spread #1218


MATERIALS::
Clarks ONT Mercerized Bedspread Cotton balls:
Single Size - 24; Double Size - 29
1 Milwards Steel Crochet Hook #7 or #8

GAUGE
:
Motif meas 8” square.
single size: approx 72” x 104” = 9 x 13 motifs
double size: approx 88” x 104” = 11 x 13 motifs

1ST MOTIF:
1ST RND
: CH 4, make 11 HDC in 3rd CH from hk. Join with sl st to top st of CH-4.

2ND RND: CH 3 (to count as DC), DC in same place as join, 2 DC in each of next 11 HDC (24 DC in all). Join to top of CH-3.

3RD RND: CH 3, 2 DC in same place as sl st; * CH 4, SC in 1st CH of CH-4 (P made); sk 2 DC, 3 DC in next DC. Rep from * around, end with P, join.

4TH RND: CH 9, DC in 4th CH from hk; make 5 more DC over rem CH, work over bar of CH rather than into individual CH's (7-DC group made). * CH 3 (to count as DC), turn. DC in next 6 DC; CH 3, turn. DC in next 6 DC (square made). Sk 3-DC group & next P of 3rd rnd, make DTRC in 1st DC of next 3-DC group, CH 3, 6 DC in sp under DTRC-bar just made (another 7-DC group). Rep from * around (8 squares in all). Join with sl st to base of turning CH of 1st square, sl st in next 2 CH sts (this brings work to base of 2nd DC-row of square).

5TH RND: * CH 5, SC at top of same DC, CH 5, SC in top of turning CH at corner of square, CH 5, sk next DC on other side of square, make SC in next DC, CH 5, sk 1 DC, SC in next DC, CH 5, SC in top of turning CH of 1st row of next square (this is base of 2nd DC-row of square). Rep from * around, join last CH-5 at base of 1st LP.

6TH RND: Sl st to center CH of LP, * CH 5, SC in next LP. Rep from * around, join last CH-5 to base of 1st LP.

7TH RND: Sl st to center CH of LP, SC in same LP; * in next LP make: 2 DC, 2 tr, CH 3, 2 tr & 2 DC; SC in next LP, making corner. (CH 5, SC in next LP) 8 times. Rep from * around, end with CH 2, DC in 1st SC, to form last LP.
8TH RND: * DC in next 2 DC, DC in next 2 TRC; in CH-3 sp make 3 DC, CH 3 & 3 DC; DC in next 2 TRC, DC in next 2 DC, SC in next LP; (CH 5, SC in next LP) 7 times. Rep from * around, end with CH 2, DC in DC at end of prev rnd, for last LP.

9TH RND: * DC in next 7 DC, in corner CH-3 make 3 DC, CH 3 & 3 DC; DC in next 7 DC, SC in next LP, make 6 CH-5 LPs. Rep from * around, end as before.

10TH & 11TH RNDS: Rep 9th rnd, have 3 more DC in each group & 1 LP less on each side, on each rnd.

DO NOT COUNT LAST DC OF LAST LP OF PREV RND IN 1ST DC-GROUP OF FOLLOWING RND. 

12TH RND: Rep prev rnd, end with CH 5, SC in DC of last LP of prev rnd.

13TH RND: * SC in 1st DC of next group; (CH 5, sk 1 DC, SC in next DC) 8 times, CH 5, SC in corner sp, CH 5, sk 2 DC, SC in next DC; (CH 5, sk 1 DC, SC in next DC) 8 times, CH 2, 5 DC in each of next 3 LPs, CH 2. Rep from * around, sl st in SC at base of 1st LP.

14TH RND: Sl st in next 3 CH, SC in LP; * (CH 5, SC in next LP) 17 times; CH 2, DC in next 15 DC, CH 2, SC in CH-5 LP. Rep from * around, end with CH 2, sl st in SC at base of 1st LP.

15TH RND: Sl st to center of LP, SC in LP, ** (CH 5, SC in next LP) 16 times; CH 2, * make DC in next 3 DC, hold back on hk last LP of each DC, YO & draw thru all LPs at once (CLUSTER), CH 5. Rep from * 3 more times, make another cluster, CH 2, SC in next LP. Then rep from ** around, end with CH 2, sl st in SC at base of 1st LP. Fasten off.
2ND MOTIF:
Work as for 1st motif to 14th rnd incl.

15TH RND: Make 1st 9 LPs as on 1st motif, CH 2, sl st in corres LP on prev motif (BE SURE TO KEEP MOTIFS RIGHT SIDE UP), CH 2, SC in next LP on motif in work, CH 2, sl st in next corres LP on 1st motif, CH 2, SC in next LP on motif in work (2 CH-5 LPs joined). CH 2 & cont same until 7 joined LPs are made, CH 2, cluster over next 3 DC, * CH 2, sl st in CH-5 bet next 2 clusters on 1st motif, CH 2, cluster over next 3 DC on motif in work. Rep from * to last cluster incl.; CH 2, SC in next LP on motif in work, CH 2, sl st in next corres LP of 1st motif. Continue same until 7 LPs in all have been joined following clusters. Compl rnd as for 1st motif (NO MORE JOINS).

Make necessary number of motifs, join at all adjacent sides in same way as 2nd motif was joined to 1st (8 LPs in all rem free bet joins for fill-in lace to be made later).

FILL-IN LACE:

Fill in all sps bet squares as follows: CH 4, join with sl st to form ring, CH 4, sl st in center CH of free LP at corner (in sp bet joins), * CH 4, SC in ring, CH 4, sl st in center CH of next free LP. Rep from * until the 8 free LPs are joined to center; end with SC in ring, join. Fasten off.

Block bedspread to meas shown.
