Vintage 1942 Lacy Cable Sweater

This sweet gossamer-like woolly, with its starry design collar, button-down front, short sleeves & attractive lacy cable stitch, will serve you for those lighter moments.  This dainty jumper is designed for afternoon & evening wear.

SIZE:
32-34

MATERIALS:
5 skeins Sun-Glo shrinkproof 2-ply fingering wool
2 Pairs needles #10 & #14
1 Crochet hook
1 Press-stud
7 Small button moulds [or purchase buttons]

MEASUREMENTS:
Length from top of shoulder:  20”
Bust:  32”-34”
Length of sleeve seam:  4 ½”

TENSION:
8 sts = 1”
9 rows = 1”



BACK:
Using #14 needles, cast on 100 sts.
Work in rib on k 1, p 1 for 3 ½” [work 1st row into back of sts].
Change to #10 needles, p 5, * p twice into next st, p 2, rep from * to last 7 sts, p 7 [130 sts].
1ST ROW:  K 1, * p 2, p 2 tog, make 1, k 1, make 1, p 2 tog, p 2, k 8, rep from *, end with k 1 instead of k 8.
2ND ROW:  K 1, * k 3, p 3, k 3, p 8, rep from *, end with p 1 instead of p 8.
3RD ROW:  K 1, * p 1, p 2 tog, make 1, k 3, make 1, p 2 tog, p 1, sl 2 sts on to spare needle & leave in front of work, k 2, k 2 sts from spare needle, sl 2 sts on spare needle & leave at back of work, k 2, k 2 sts from spare needle [this will be called cable 8], rep from *, end with k 1 instead of cable 8.
4TH ROW:  K 1, * k 2, p 5, k 2, p 8, rep from *, end with p 1 instead of p 8.
5TH ROW:  K 1, * p 2 tog, make 1, k 5, make 1, p 2 tog, k 8, rep from *, end with k 1 instead of k 8.
6TH ROW:  K 1, * k 1, p 7, k 1, p 8, rep from *, end with p 1 instead of p 8.
7TH ROW:  K 1, * p 1, make 1, k 2, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, k 2, make 1, p 1, cable 8, rep from *, end with k1 instead of cable 8.
8TH ROW:  Rep 6th row.
9TH ROW:  K 1, * p 2, make 1, k 1, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, k 1, make 1, p 2, k 8, rep from *, end with k 1 instead of k 8.
10TH ROW:  Rep 4th row.
11TH ROW:  K 1, * p 3, make 1, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, make 1, p 3, cable 8, rep from *, end with k 1 instead of cable 8.
12TH ROW:  Rep 2nd row.
Rep last 12 rows until work meas 12 ½”.

Shape armholes by casting off 7 sts at beg of next 2 rows.
Cast off 5 sts at beg of next 4 rows [96 sts].
Cont in patt until armholes meas 4”.
K 1 row; knitting every 15th & 16th sts tog [90 sts].
Cont in garter st for 3”.

Shape shoulders by casting off 10 sts at beg of next 6 rows.  Cast off.

FRONT:
Using #14 needles cast on 100sts.
Work in rib of k 1, p 1 for 3 ½” [working 1st row into back of sts].
Change to #10 needles, * p 1, p twice into next st, rep from * to end [150 sts].
1ST ROW:  Work 79 sts in patt [leave rem 71 sts on spare needle].
Cont in patt on last 79 sts, & when work meas 12 ½”, cast off 7 sts at armhole edge of next row.
Cast off 5 sts at armhole edge every 2nd row twice [62 sts].
When armhole meas 4”, k 1 row, knitting every 3rd & 4th sts tog [47 sts].
Work in garter st for 1 ¼”, then cast off 9 sts at neck edge of next row.
K 2 tog at neck edge of next 4 rows, then every 2nd row until dec to 30 sts.

When armhole meas 7”, shape shoulder by casting off 10 sts at armhole edge every 2nd row 3 times.
Join wool at basque, cast on 8 sts, work in patt to end of row.

Cont in patt, make buttonholes as follows:  1st one being 2” above basque, & 6 more 2” apart.
Buttonholes:  Work 4 sts, wrm, k 2 tog, work to end of row.
Shape armhole, neck & shoulder to correspond with left front.

SLEEVES:
Using #14 needles, cast on 80 sts.
Work in rib of k 1, p 1 of 1 ½” [working 1st row into back of sts].
Change to #10 needles, p 7, * p twice into next st, p 1, rep from * to last 7 sts, p 7 [113 sts].
Work in patt for 3”, then k 2 tog each end of every 2nd row until dec to 33 sts.  Cast off.

CUFFS:
Using #10 needles, cast on 12 sts.
K into back of sts.
1ST ROW:  K twice into 1st st, k to end.
2ND ROW:  K.
Rep last 2 rows until inc to 18 sts.
K 4 rows.
NEXT ROW:  K 2 tog, k to end.
NEXT ROW: K.
Rep last 2 rows until dec to 12 sts.
Rep from 1st row until work meas 9”.  Cast off.
Sew along edge of sleeve & turn back.

COLLAR:
Using #10 needles, cast on 54 sts.
K into back of sts.
K 1 row, knitting twice into every 4th st [105 sts].
Work in garter st for ½”.
K 2 tog each end of every 2nd row 4 times, then every row 4 times.  Cast off.

BORDER:
Using #10 needles, cast on 6 sts.
K into back of sts.
Rep directions as for cuffs, but inc to 12 instead of 18 sts when long enough to go around edge of collar.  Cast off.
If you are not purchasing buttons, here are the instructions to crochet your own.

BUTTONS: [7]:
Crochet 4 chain.  Join into ring with sl st.
Make 3 ch, then work 16 trc into ring & join with sl st to top of ch 3 at beg.
Cut end of wool & thread thru darning needle, draw thru tops of trc & cover button moulds.

FINISHING:
Press lightly with warm iron & damp cloth.
Sew up seam, pleat sleeves around armholes.
Sew border around collar.
Sew on collar.
Sew buttons on left front & press stud at neck edge.
