Vintage 1940s Lacy Bedjacket Cardigan Sweater


The becoming round yoke edged with angora, tops the dainty lace pattern to produce this attractive bedjacket.

SIZE:

12 to 14, & 16 to 18.
Directions are for size 12 to 14, with changes for size 16 to 18 in brackets.


MATERIALS:

Beehive Fingering 3 ply Patronsed, 1 oz, 8 [9] balls
OR
Patwin 3 ply Patonised, 1 oz, 8 [9] balls
One [1/2 oz] ball Fuzzy-Wuzzy

MEASUREMENTS:

1ST SIZE:  bust 32”/34”; length at centre back 20”; sleeve seam 12”.

2ND SIZE:  bust 36”/38”; length at centre back 20 3/4”; sleeve seam 12”.

TENSION:

8 sts & 10 rows = 1” with #10 needles in stockinette st.


PATTERN:

1ST ROW:  K.


2ND ROW:  K 1, p to last st, k 1.

3RD ROW:  K 1, * k 2 tog, wl fwd.  K below by inserting point of right hand needle from front to back of work, thru st below next st on left hand needle.  K this st in usual way, drawing lp thru to front of work onto right hand needle, then dropping st above off left hand needle.  Wl fwd, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1.  Rep from * to end of row.

4TH ROW:  K 1, p to last st, k 1.

These 4 rows complete one patt.

BACK:

With #10 needles, cast on 127 [139] sts.


K 10 rows garter st [plain knitting every row].

Beg with 2nd patt row, cont even in patt until work meas 12” from beg, or desired length, ending with 4th patt row.

When knitted to correct tension, work should stretch very easily in width to 18” [20”], will retaining desired length.

SHAPE ARMHOLES:

Keep continuity of patt, cast off 6 sts beg next 2 rows.


Cont even in patt until armhole from 1st shaping meaas approx 3” [3 ¾”}, ending with 2nd patt row.

NEXT ROW:  K 1, * k 2 tog, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1.  Rep from * to last 6 sts, k 2 tog, k 4.

P 1 row. 

Break wool & leave rem 78 [86] sts on thread [or st holder].

LEFT FRONT:

With #10 needles, cast on 67 [73] sts.


K 10 rows garter st.

11TH ROW:  K 6 for garter st border at front edge.  P to end of row [side edge].

Beg with 3rd patt row & keeping garter st border at front edge, cont even until same length as back to armholes, ending with 4th patt row.

SHAPE ARMHOLE:

Keep continuity of patt, cast off 6 sts, beg next row for armhole, then cont even until armhole from 1st shaping meas approx 2” [2 ¾”}, ending with 2nd patt row.


NEXT ROW:  K 1, * k 2 tog, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1.  Rep from * to last 6 sts, k 6.

Work 1 row even.  Break wool * leave rem 43 [47] sts on thread.

RIGHT FRONT:

With #10 needles, cast on 67 [73] sts.


K 10 rows garter st.

11TH ROW:  [SIDE EDGE]:  P to last 6 sts.  K 6 for garter sr border at front edge.

Cont to correspond to left front, be careful, to have armhole shaping for opposite side.

LEFT SLEEVE:

With #10 needles, cast on 65 [69] sts.


K 29 rows garter st.

NEXT ROW:  K 1, * inc 1 st in next st, k 1.  Rep from * to end of row.  97 [103] sts on needle.

Beg with 2nd patt row, cont even in patt until sleeve meas 12” from beg, or desired length, ending with 4th patt row.

SHAPE CAP:

Keep continuity of patt, cast off 6 sts beg next 2 rows.


Cont even until cap from 1st shaping meas approx 2” [2 ¾”], ending with 2nd patt row.

1ST ROW:  Work in patt to last 12 sts.  Turn.

2ND & ALTERNATE ROWS:  Sl 1st st, p to end of row.

** 3RD ROW:  K to last 24 sts.  Turn.

5TH ROW:  Work in patt to last 36 sts.  Turn.

7TH ROW:  K to last 48 sts.  Turn.

9TH ROW:  Work in patt to last 60 sts.  Turn.

11TH ROW:  K to last 72 sts.  Turn.

13TH ROW:  K 1, * k 2 tog, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1.  Rep from * to end of row.

P 1 row.  Break wool & leave rem 57 [61] sts on thread.**

RIGHT SLEEVE:

Work as given for left sleeve until cap from 1st shaping meas approx 2” [2 ¾”], ending with 1st patt row, instead of 2nd patt row in order to put shaping at top at opposite side.


1ST ROW:  P to last 12 sts.  Turn.

2ND & ALTERNATE ROWS:  Sl 1 st.  Work to end of row.

Substituting p rows for k & patt rows, & k & patt rows for p rows, work from ** to ** as given for left sleeve.

YOKE:

With wrong side of work facing, sl sts of left front, left sleeve, back, right sleeve, & right front onto #13 needle.  278 [302] sts on needle.


With right side of work facing, join angora & k 2 rows.

3RD ROW:  [1ST BUTTONHOLE]:  K 3.  Cast off 2 sts, k to end of row.

4TH ROW:  K to last 3 sts.  Cast on 2 sts, k 3.

K 2 rows.

Break angora & join wool.

Change to #10 needles & k 1 row.

8TH ROW:  K 6, * p 2, k 2.  Rep from * to last 8 sts, p 2, k 6.

9TH ROW:  K 8, * p 2, k 2.  Rep from * to last 6 sts, k 6.

Rep last 2 rows for 2”, ending with 8th row.

Join angora.

Change to #13 needles.

NEXT ROW:  K 8, * k 2 tog, k 2.  Rep from * to last 6 sts, k 6.

K 1 row.

Work 2nd buttonhole on next 2 rows.

K 2 rows more.

Break angora & join wool.

Change to #10 needles & k 1 row.

NEXT ROW:  K 6, * p 2, k 1.  Rep from * to last 8 sts, p 2 k 6.

Work 2” even in this ribbing & with right side of work facing, break wool.

Join angora.  Change to #13 needles.

NEXT ROW:  K 6, * k 2 tog.  Rep from * to last 6 sts, k 6.  112 [121] sts on needle.

K 1 row.

Work 3rd buttonhole on next 2 rows.

K 2 rows more.

Cast off, being sure cast-off edge will fit comfortably around neck.

FINISHING:

Block & press each piece.


Sew side & sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves at underarms.

Sew buttons to correspond to buttonholes.
