Vintage 1920s Diagonal Block Crochet Bedspread

A clever needlewoman will quickly crochet this elegant bedspread…
A perfect decorator touch!

SIZE:  
Single spread approx 66" x 99" without fringe;
double spread approx 88" x 99"

Materials:
Lily Antique Bedspread Cotton, Art # 59, 700 yd Skeins: Single Bed 13 Skeins;  Double Bed 16 Skeins
#10 Steel Crochet Hook

GAUGE: 
Each Block meas approx 11" square. 
For single spread make 6 x 9 blocks; for double spread make 8 x 9 blocks.

BLOCK: 
1ST RND:  Ch 8 (to count as dc & ch-5), dc in 1st ch, (ch 5, dc in same ch 1 twice, ch 5, join with sl st to 3rd ch of ch-8.

2ND RND:  Ch 3, * 5 dc in next sp; in next dc make dc, ch 5 & dc.  Rep from * around, ending 5 dc in last sp, dc in joining, ch 2, dc in top of ch-3.

3RD RND:  Ch 5, turn, * dc in each of 7 dc, ch 2: in 3rd ch of ch-5 make dc, ch 5 & dc; ch 2.  Rep from * around, ending dc in last 7 dc, ch 2, dc in joining, ch 2, dc in 3rd ch of ch-5.

4TH RND:  Ch 3, turn, (2 dc in next sp. dc in next dc) twice, * ch 5, sk next 5 dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc; in corner sp make 3 dc, ch 5 & 3 dc; dc in next dc, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc.  Rep from * around, ending 3 dc in last corner, ch 2, dc in top of ch-3.

5TH RND:  Ch 5, turn, * dc in each of next 7 dc, ch 3, sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 3, dc in next 7 dc, ch 2; in 3rd ch of corner ch-5 make dc, ch 5 & dc; ch 2.  Rep from * around ending same as rnd 3.

6TH RND:  Ch 3, turn. (2 dc in next sp, do in next dc) twice, * ch 5, sk next 5 dc, dc in next dc, ch 5, dc in next dc, ch 5, sk next dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc; in corner sp make 3 dc, ch 5 & 3 dc ; dc in next dc, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc.  Rep from * around, ending same as rnd 4.

7TH RND:  Ch 5, turn, * dc in next 7 dc; ch 3, sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 3, dc in next dc (lacet made), make lacets across ch-5 sps, ending dc in 1st dc of 7-dc group; dc in next 6 dc, ch 2; in 3rd ch of corner make dc, ch 5 & dc, ch 2.  Rep from * around, ending same as rnd 3.

8TH RND:  Ch 3, turn, (2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc) twice, * ch 5, sk next 5 dc, dc in next dc; ch 5, dc in next dc (bar made over lacet), make bars across lacets, ending dc in 1st dc of 7-dc group, ch 5, sk 5 dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc; in corner sp make 3 dc, ch 5 & 3 dc; dc in next dc, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc.  Rep from * around, ending same as rnd 4.

9TH THRU 21ST RNDS:  Rep rnds 7 & 8 alternately, ending with rnd 7.
Cut thread & fasten.

JOINING Blocks: 
On last rnd, work to 1st corner of block; in corner make dc, ch 5, sl st in corner of finished block, ch 2, sl st in 3rd ch of ch-5 just made, ch 2, dc in corner of block being made, ch 2; dc in next dc, ch 2, sl st in corresponding dc on finished block, ch 2, sl st in dc just completed (joined dc). 

Work across lacets, joining dcs, & complete next corner to correspond (22 joinings on side).  Complete block.

Join other blocks in same manner on adjacent sides.

Fringe: 
Cut 12" length by wrapping thread around 6" piece of cardboard & cutting at one edge. 

Double 4 strands tog holding ends even & pull center of strands thru ch-3 sp at edge of spread with crochet hk, draw cut ends thru lp thus formed & pull tight. 

Make fringe in each ch-3 sp around edge on both sides & across bottom of spread. 

Trim ends even.
